Safe Havens: Iwi Housing

How Iwi Housing Transformed Stewart Reweti’s Commitment to Conservation

As part of our settlement redress package, several properties have been returned to Te Korowai o Wainuiārua, providing much-needed support and resources for the community. Among those benefiting from these new housing opportunities is Stewart Reweti, the Team Leader of our Jobs for Nature programme.

Eight months ago, Stewart took on the role of leading efforts to set up traps in the bush, aiming to restore and protect our natural environment. However, his commitment came with a significant challenge: a daily commute from Whanganui. The journey, often fraught with dangers, included perilous drives over the Paraparas, which frequently experienced slips, especially after heavy rains.

“The drive has been quite dangerous, particularly after a long day of work,” Stewart explained. “I often find my eyes very heavy on the way home.”

With the return of these properties, Stewart has now found a safe and convenient place to call home, provided by our iwi housing. “Being able to rent a home from the iwi has been a godsend,” he said with a sense of relief. This new arrangement not only enhances his safety but also allows him to focus more on his crucial work without the added stress of a dangerous commute.

This redress package symbolises more than just the return of land; it represents a renewal of community and support for uri, ensuring their well-being and enabling them to continue contributing to our shared future.
