The Official Restoration of Waimarino

After much anticipation, we are pleased to announce that the name Waimarino has been officially restored to our whenua. The Minister for Land Information, Chris Penk, has approved the reversion.

Waimarino is the traditional Māori name of the area, symbolising the calm waters that once pooled on the plains beneath the mountain. This name holds significant cultural and historical value for our iwi.

Our Chair, Aiden Gilbert, stated:

“It’s been a long time coming. Well done to the minister and his advisers for reverting to the original name. From a historical perspective, it’s the right decision.”

Gilbert added, “The name for that place is part of our historical narrative. Recognising it just adds another missing piece to the understanding of our historical landscape.”

This is a great example of how our voices matter! Over 2,500 public submissions in support of this kaupapa have made a real difference in restoring the Waimarino name.

But whanau, there is another important kaupapa that requires your voice. The Treaty Principles Bill is currently under discussion, and we need to ensure our perspectives are heard. Please make your submission and stand with us as we advocate for the proper recognition of our rights and principles under Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Your voice counts, and together, we can make a difference once again.
